Why does the same Toronto home get three different prices?

The same Toronto home has three prices, and which one you pay depends only on which company picked up.

Take a 950 sq ft two-bedroom condo. Priced by bedroom, one Toronto company charges $176 flat. Priced by square foot, another charges $208 plus HST. Priced by the hour at $59 per cleaner with a three-hour minimum, three hours at $59 is $177 plus HST for one cleaner — and $354 if they send two. Same condo. Same day. Nothing about the home changed.

And one of those companies does not agree with itself. Its homepage publishes a one-bedroom standard clean at $149 and a two-bedroom at $169. Its own prices page publishes $156 and $176. Both pages were live on the same morning. The three- and four-bedroom rates are identical on both. If a company's own two pages are $7 apart on the same job, the number you were quoted on the phone is not a price list — it is whichever page the person answering had open.

Then there is the part that is not on any table until after you book. Pets add $29 at one company and $45 at the other. Inside the oven, $29. Inside the fridge, $29. Interior windows on a four-bedroom, $130. A finished basement, $69 to $110 depending on bedrooms. A $176 clean with a dog, an oven, a fridge and a finished basement is $299 before anyone mentions tax.

Two Toronto cleaning companies both publish a flat price for a standard clean, and they do not measure the same thing — one counts bedrooms, the other counts square feet — so the same condo can sit in two different price brackets depending only on which company you called first.
